Spawn Details
Pre-Spawn Behavior: |
Male flares fins and displays to the female. They come together, swimming parallel, the female appearing to "hitch a ride" up, resting her pelvic fin on the male's. They do a spawning rise, swimming parallel towards the surface repeatedly. In my shorter tanks, if they make it to the surface, they may continue te spawnig rise on the horizontal plane.
Spawning Behavior:
The actual spawning occurs very quickly, lasting only a second at the end of a spawning rise. Eggs and sperm are released, and the pair makes a mad dash away from the surface.
Post Spawn Behavior:
Relatively none...the pair goes to sleep.
Egg Details
Size: |
1 mm
Color: |
clear
Quantity: |
as many at 600
Description:
The eggs are buoyant and initially somewhat sticky - they appear to come in clumps sometimes, although there are always many individual eggs as well.
Location:
The eggs float to the surface but are very slow to do so if not already there. In a tank with NO water movement, the eggs appear to be attracted to the meniscus around the edge of the tank.
Other Details:
I tracked spawnings for almost a year and the fish, on average, spawned every 4 days. Sometimes they took a whole week off, other times they would spawn 3-4 days in a row.
