Spawn Details
Pre-Spawn Behavior: |
Typical courtship for dragonettes, with the male flairing his dorsal fin. Interestingly perhaps, I've found the female to be somewhat of an instigator in ALL my pairings of Synchiropus ocellatus...sometimes appearing to almost bully the male into spawning. Anyway, when partners are willing, they comense the typical dragonette spawning rise, with the female kinda resting her pelvic fin on the males, the two swimming in parallel towards the water's surface.
Spawning Behavior:
Never actually witnessed the spawn, only collected eggs later. But I would presume that these, just like any other Synchiropus, release their eggs at the apex of the last "spawning rise".
Post Spawn Behavior:
the pair separates, goes back to the reef floor and buries themselves for the night (both S. ocellatus and S. stellatus require a sandy substrate as they SLEEP IN THE SAND).

Floated to the surface.

Other Details:
Not much else to say. Typically, my S. ocellatus pairs have often been in with other dragonettes, which would've made knowing WHICH species spawned difficult, especially since they spawn frequenly (until you reared the offspring). That said, at the time, the female spotted mandarin that shared the tank was missing (in the filtration IIRC) which meant these eggs could only have come from the Scooters. I incubated them, but did not get a hatch from this single collection. They could have been infertile, or I could have easily botched incubation.
