Spawn Details
Pre-Spawn Behavior: |
The acting female (these are synchronously hermaphroditic) was noticeably fat the day of spawn. Not so mush overall fat but a noticeable bulge in the belly. Other than that nothing was different than any other day.
Spawning Behavior:
I didn't witness the spawning behavior. I turned the filter on the tank off about 20 minutes after the lights go out and have noticed eggs two night in a row at the same time. This leads me to believe the spawn is happening just as lights go out, otherwise the eggs would have been sucked into the filter.
Post Spawn Behavior:
Nothing different observed, they both go there separate ways.
Egg Details
Size: |
~1mm
Color: |
clear with a dark spot in the center
Quantity: |
I collected about 20 eggs, I assume there are more that were not found
Description:
The eggs are very small, clear with a spot in the center, buoyant.
Location:
These are pelagic spawners, the eggs were found floating at the water surface.
Other Details:
I noticed the female was really fat the day of the spawn so I took some pics of the pair. That night (7/7/14) I didn't get to the tank until about 20 minutes after the lights went out. I turned off the filter and used a flashlight to illuminate the surface, and I found eggs floating. Since the filter was still on I assume the spawn was very recent or I wouldn't have found any eggs. I collected the eggs using a pipet and I transferred them to a clear plastic specimen container that I attached to the rim of the tank and floated in the water. The container did not have any air or movement added. It was floating in the tank water so it was kept at the same temp as the tank.
