Feeding Tactics/Medium: |
Used reef aquarium water diluted to 1.020 sterilized with 1 mL chlorine bleach per 1 gallon mixed for 12 hours. Then dechlorinated with 1 mL sodium thiosulphate solution (60g per 500 mL RO/DI) per 1 mL bleach mixed for 1 hour. Then add 2L of this sterilized saltwater to a 2L sterilized pop bottle, and add 0.75 mL Florida Aqua Farms Micro Algae Grow. Cap it. I will store this prepared medium in a dark(ish) area until use (a week tops).
Pop bottles cleaned by using a tubing brush to remove stuck on algae remnants, rinse well in hot water. Sterilized by adding a few drops chlorine bleach into 250 mL tap water into bottle, shake it up every hour or so for a few hours, rinse well, add a few drops sodium thiosulphate solution to 250 mL tap water, shake up well, rinse out. Cap it.
Rigid airlines are sterilized by using toothpick to remove any algae remnants in the tip, then set that end in 250 mL tap water with a few drops bleach for an hour, rinse well, use cotton pad with 95% ethanol to clean outside of rigid tubing.

Split Cycle: |
I split when I can't see through the bottom little legs/toes on the pop bottles. This is usually about 7-10 days. Sometimes splits don't work, and the culture will fail. |

Harvest Methology: |
Split method: Using a sterilized 2L pop bottle add 1.75L prepared sterilized growing medium, top up with 0.25L old culture, insert sterilized rigid tubing. Set in front of lights. |
Adjustments Made: |
Started with Miracle Gro liquid and Kent Essential Elements for fertilizer. Worked fine for the month that I used it. Used it at a rate of 5mL MG and 1mL KEE in 2L sterilized saltwater. It was recommended to switch to the FAF Micro Algae Grow for long-term so I did. Seems to be the same results, except the MG + KEE matured faster, although it is possible that mix was stronger. If I was wanting to ramp up fast I would use the MG + KEE. |
