|
Hatch Time: |
night time/early morning prior to lights coming on |
Fry Count:
( at Hatch ) |
several hundred! |
Fry Count:
( at Settlement ) |
less than 50 |
Fry Size: |
still small but much larger than when released |
Food: |
rotifers and 2-3 day old enriched brine; they would also eat the small pods crawling on the glass and decor |
Feeding Schedule: |
2-3 times per day; all they can eat in 1 hour |
Fry Description: (Pre Settlement) |
pelagic, voracious appetites, strong swimmers;
birth to 2 weeks old is easy. The trouble comes at the 2 week mark when suddenly they stop eating, starve and slowly die.
|
Fry Description: (Post Settlement) |
The reidi fry that made it past settlement seemed to be the ones that would actively hunt pods from the glass and decor. My thinking is that these benthic pods (and the nutrition they render) are key. |

Other Information: |
A proper food source to get the fry beyond the 2 week mark is critical. Even enriched brine do not allow for great numbers to survive. Moving several post-settlement fry to a large 40 gallon breeder teaming with benthic pods allowed me to succeed with rearing two of these beautiful seahorses. |
