Feeding Tactics/Medium: |
Clean media jars as well as possible with distilled white vinegar, water, and a bottle brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean tap water. Fill each jar with 1200 ml of used tank water. Add 300 ml RO water. Place a foam stopper in the mouth of the jar. Microwave until the media reaches between 185 and 200 F. Let cool to room temperature. Add 0.75 ml of FAF Micro Algae Grow to each jar. Innoculate with 500 ml of a dense culture.
Split Cycle: |
Typically once every 10 days. Varies from as few as 7 days to as many as 28 days. NOTE: Waiting 28 days only happened once, and was very risky to the culture's health!
Split Yield: |
I typically create two new cultures from each 2000 ml culture, leaving 1000 ml (plus another 2000 ml from the 2nd culture originally created on the same day) for feeding zooplankton.
Number of Cultures: |
At least 4 at any time.
Number of Splits:< |
Hard to say. Probably around 20 - 30 or so.
Density: |
~5 million cells/ml after split. ~ 20 million cells/ml before split.
Harvest Methodology: |
After splitting dense culture into new cultures, feed the remainder to zooplankton cultures needing it. Unused phyto is kept in phyto station and is kept bubbling until it is used.
Adjustments Made: |
Very few, since inception of my protocol. Keep cultures as cool as possible in my environment. Switched to all 6500K lights.
