Reasons Species Should be Reclassified: |
Because after much wrangling, we concluded that O. halli should be Class D. It makes sense that two species that presumably are virtually identical ought to have the same ranking.
We have species such as Lysmata amboinensis with a similar larval period as clear D's that no one questions. We have pelagic spawners with significantly shorter larval phases also as D's (Eg. Synchiropus picturatus, with only 16 days to settlement). The line between Class C being strictly "demersal" and Class D being strictly pelagic spawners has been crossed, given that we have Pomacanthus semicirculatus, with it's 21 day larval phase, ranked as a Class C. This line is going to continue to blur...eg. no one would argue that X. mento is a Class D species despite being a demersal spawner and we have classified it as such - http://www.mbisite.org/Search.aspx?Species=340
I believe O. longirostris was incorrectly classified as "C" based on an arbitrary demarcation (demersal vs. pelagic) that we've since removed as an "Absolute". This species deserves reexamination since almost 5 years later, no one has yet to repeat my success. |

I should point out that if raised to D, points should be increased accordingly. We've taken the stance that when downgrading, points should not be taken away because that's unfair. On the flipside, for someone to receive MORE points at a later date, with the roadmap of my experience already there to guide them, seems completely unfair as well. |
